Management & Leadership Mentorship Programme

Dr Stuart Winearls, ICM ST7

What is the Management & Leadership Mentorship Programme?

This is a program of study and a mentorship designed to help ICM trainees develop leadership and management skills required of a newly appointed consultant. Through the mixed program outlined below it hopes mentees will gain insights into the following questions;

• What does it mean to be a medical leader and how do I develop to become one?

• What does it mean to be a part of the managerial team of a department or organisation?

• What are the organisational structures and systems that I will be required to work in and how do they operate?

• How do I practically undertake some of the tasks required of a medical leader and manager?

• How does hospital and NHS finance work? What will be my role in ensuring effective utilisation of resources and how will I advocate for resource allocation for my patient group

What does it involve?

The guiding principle of the program is to pair trainees with a clinical leader as a mentor. The mentors have a wealth of experience to share from their diverse range of leadership roles, ranging from Head of service, deputy medical directors to leads for regional and national organisations.

Through this mentee mentor relationship, trainee gain longitudinal workplace management and leadership experience, shadowing both their mentor and other clinical leaders. They participate in a variety of management task required of a newly appointed consultant. This is supported by a program of teaching for the trainees both small group and self-directed leadership modules accessed via the NHS Leadership Academy.

Who can apply?

This is an additional program undertaken in the trainees own professional development time the program is aimed at post FICM exam ICM trainees in their last 2 years of training. So it doesn’tcompete with early registrar clinical development and exam preparation.

Where is it offered?

It is delivered across the Severn region in all the hospitals offering stage 3 ICM training. The mentee will be paired with a mentor from a specific site and the mentorship and attachment at that site will continue as the trainee rotates through different posts in the region giving a more longitudinal experience.
