🔢 Unit Structure & Capacity

Two Adult Critical Care Units:

  • Cheltenham General Hospital (CGH): 12 beds

  • Gloucestershire Royal Hospital (GRH): 19 beds

Combined Annual Admissions: ~1,500 patients

  • GRH: ~1,100

  • CGH: ~400

Paediatric Care: 34–45 critically ill children admitted to GRH annually

The department underpins a broad range of complex, high-acuity services:

Surgical Specialties:

  • Upper GI cancer resections

  • Extensive lower GI resections

  • Major vascular surgery

  • Head & neck surgery

  • Gynae-oncology surgery

  • Major urology surgery

Medical and Emergency Support:

  • Regional Haematology-Oncology

  • Emergency laparotomies – highest volume in the South-West

  • 24/7 Primary PCI service

  • Complex interventional radiology

📚 Teaching & Education

The department offers a structured and varied educational programme:

Weekly Sessions:

  • Radiology teaching

  • ICM teaching

Additional Opportunities:

  • Alternate monthly M&M meetings

  • Participation in Critical Care Rehab Clinic

Ultrasound Training:

  • 2 TOE-accredited consultants

  • Trainers affiliated with both FICE and FUSIC HD
